Why We Take A Winter Break

We are at the finish line for 2020. It is safe to say that all of us are looking forward to a new calendar year, no matter how the past twelve months have gone for you.

We want to share something our agency does. Something that many may raise their eyebrows against. Something that a lot of corporate companies, at least, might shun.

As a small business, we think it is incredibly important that you approach your holiday season as we do… which we recently discussed in our last podcast episode of 2020.


Our Current Status: Out of Office

if you’re reading this right now, we are not working. That’s right. We are taking a break. And when we say “break”, we mean it. We like to shut down for a full two weeks, right before Christmas and right through after New Year’s Day. We are not hardly checking email. We take a full mental health break and life reset. 

As small business owners and team members, we are working almost 24 hours a day, seven days a week in some capacity. If at any time, a red notification pops up from a message or an email, we are probably checking it, no matter the time of day. It is just the beast that one deals with when you are starting and running a small business.

We started taking a winter break two years ago. The ability to take that time during that time of year with your family – no matter if you have kids or not –  to truly disconnect is a joy. We will admit it – we really want to enjoy the down time of the holiday season. So how do we go about doing this? 


Get Ahead.

To be able to take off the last two weeks of the year, we front load work earlier into the fourth quarter of the year. We try to make a huge effort in the months of October, November and early December to get as far ahead as possible – pushing three, four, five, six weeks ahead, if possible. That way, work is scheduled and we are not tied to pushing the publish button in the moment. Short of a five alarm fire, we disconnect to get a good reset and be able to come in and hit the ground running the first week of the year. However, you can’t do it if you don’t have an awesome team to help get ahead on that day-to-day grind. 


Fail to Plan. Plan to Fail.

This time of year is an excellent one to get a handle on your marketing and social media strategies via a great plan and action steps for the future. Our last episode of the Sip, Create, Repeat podcast was all about planning out these efforts. We have a good deal of work as an agency that is recurring management of tasks – whether that’s ads, social media posts, email campaigns, etc. – so we take some time to anticipate our clients’ needs (and our agency’s own) in the new year.


Work On Your Business, Not In It.

Okay, maybe we are working a little bit. When you are in the grind of the day-to-day and focusing on the needs of your clients, it is easy to not take care of your agency as intently. We take some of our down time to look at what needs to be addressed within our own business. We will find a day or two to focus on a few things that were pushed to the back of the to-do list during the year. That way, when we are back from break in early January, they are already taken care of. 


Go for the Goals.

It is also a good time to set goals. We make time for a meeting to look at how the previous year went. We look at the past twelve months and compare the goals that we set at the beginning of the year and reset them for the upcoming year. Remember: If you don’t have goals, you won’t reach that potential that you think you can reach. 


It’s Break Time.

Think about it as a small business owner. It’s hard to take time off. While you may be able to fit in a vacation here and there, it’s still impossible to disconnect from your business.  So we challenge anyone who is reading to this to find a way to truly disconnect and find a way to focus on yourself.
