The Work From Anywhere Chronicles – Traveling & Running An Agency Post 3

The travel in the previous post was from St. Louis, MO to Oklahoma City, OK. I didn’t realize I would like driving through Missouri as much as I did, but it was beautiful. Rolling hills, big skies and tons of places to stop off if-needed. It was significantly better than Southwest Indiana, let me tell you. But, that’s not why you’re here. You are here for a ‘work from the road’ type update.

Efficiency is increasing, and that is a good thing.

Picking up on some habits of my children while we are in the car has helped a lot. For instance, they tend to be very needy right when we get on the road, after about 30-45 minutes they are off into coloring, reading, watching a movie, or trying to get semi trucks to beep their horns when we pass them.

But isn’t this the same lesson every professional learns? You learn about how your typical day looks and you start to work around that. Even when I’m in the office with Pat, or one of our other team members, I typically spend the first bit of my day chatting with them and whatnot before diving in to the day’s work load.

The lesson here is that it doesn’t matter if you’re in a corporate cube farm or the world’s coolest office with a barista and a ping pong table, I’m spending the first bit of my day doing almost the same thing. The big difference is that my coworkers are 5, 4 and 2 and require snacks at a pace I never realized humans could eat.

Yes I worked on a Saturday, no I don’t want anybody to feel bad about that. 

It’s completely my choice, and I’m ok with that. You see, as I’ve stated in past posts, my normal work schedule isn’t going to look like other people’s work schedules.

What if I told you that most of us have different work schedules!? 😱😱😱

So, judge me all you want, but my lunch break consisted of checking out half-buried Cadillacs in Amarillo, Texas. Here’s a few photos.

But let’s move on to some better things…


The planner that saves my days.

If you’re ever going to try a 4 day work week, or a “work from anywhere” work life, you have to be incredibly efficient in the work that you do. That means you throw your iPhone on Do Not Disturb mode, or Airplane mode, throw the headphones on and get to work.

But all too often when we dive in to our work day, we do it without a compass. We do it without a system of checks and balances to keep us on-track.

Insert the High Performance Planner by Brendan Bruchard. Yes this is the 3rd post I’ve referenced this in, no I am not getting compensated in any way, shape, or form for doing so.

But this planner helps me outline my days, who I should serve, what I must do and what I’d like to do. But, it throws in the retrospective aspect too. At the end of your work day, or your day in general, you’re supposed to take 10 minutes or so and run down a small list of questions. The goal being, did you live up to what you said you would? Often times, my eyes are bigger than my stomach. AKA, I think I can do more than I can in a day. The more I learn this, the more I can become more and more efficient with my time.

Do yourself a favor, snag his book and his planner. If you enjoy some self-help, “get you pointed in the right direction” motivation, you won’t regret it.


So, where do we go from here?

Well, we go from Santa Fe, New Mexico to northern Arizona where we will stay with family near the Prescott National Forest. Towering pines, a cabin in the woods and a hammock swaying in the breeze will be my office for the next few days.

My goal today is to finish up some site revisions to a website and set up some e-commerce email marketing automation for a client, Thankfully the Hyatt Place we stayed at has a nice desk set up and great WiFi!
